Choosing the Right Puller

You’re working on a customer’s vehicle and once all the nuts and bolts are off, the part’s still stuck. It could be a ball joint, wheel bearing or even a brake drum or rotor. What are your options? You can grab a pry bar, a hammer or whatever else is in the shop. Or you can grab a puller, break the parts loose and get the job done faster.

To find the right puller:

  1. What are you trying to pull? Are you trying to pull a shaft out of something, pull something out of a hole or pull something off a shaft? This will help you determine if you need a push-puller, jaw-type puller, slide hammer or one with internal or external-internal adapters.
  2. Determine the reach and spread you need. This will make sure your puller is long enough and the jaws, if applicable, open wide enough to exert enough force to pull the object.
  3. Estimate the force required. When in doubt, always use the next larger size to account for frozen or rusted parts.

Now that you’ve determined what you’re trying to pull, find a corresponding puller to finish the job.

  • This includes removing a gear, bearing, wheel or pulley
  • This option helps remove internal bearing cups, retainers or oil seals that are press-fitted
  • Typically you need these pullers when removing a transmission shaft or pinion shaft from a bore or housing.

Regardless of puller selected, always keep the tool clean and frequently lubricate the forcing screw fully to extend the tool’s life. With tons of force, we can’t stress safety enough when using pullers.

Happy National Cocoa Day!

Today is one of the sweetest days in the entire year. Dec. 13 is National Cocoa Day, an annual holiday that celebrates, well, cocoa.

Just in case you need a little incentive to indulge, besides tasting great, cocoa is good for you, too. The antioxidant concentration in hot cocoa is nearly twice as strong as it is in red wine, according to a study conducted at Cornell University. It not only helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, cocoa makes you feel good all over! It enhances the levels of the feel-good brain chemical, serotonin.

Winter is the perfect time to celebrate our love for hot cocoa as there is nothing better than drinking a warm mug of hot chocolate to warm up your body and spirit!

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is observed annually in the United States on December 7, to remember and honor the 2,403 citizens of the United States who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

On August 23, 1994, the United States Congress designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. On Pearl Harbor Day, the American flag should be flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died as a result of the attack on U.S. military forces in Hawaii.

Are you missing battery service opportunities?

Don’t leave your customers with a dead battery.

As auto manufacturers continue to work toward meeting more stringent fuel requirements mandated by the government, your customer’s batteries are paying part of the price. OEM’s are taking every possible load they can off the engine in order to maximize fuel economy. Unlike two to five years ago, alternators are no longer continually charging batteries like they used to. Today’s ECM’s monitor the battery and only use the alternator to charge when needed, allowing the battery to drain and then recharge — adding strain. Another piece of technology that is placing additional stress on vehicle batteries these days are the start/stop systems found in a growing number of vehicles.

Due to the battery workload realities, it is more important than ever for shops and technicians to check and inform their customers on battery health.

A recent examination of one shop found that 30% of the batteries that came through its service bays were not performing optimally. Proper battery testing is a powerful tool that can help you generate shop revenue while driving customer satisfaction, retention and conversion.

OTC — Technicians Corner . . . When to Reset a Charging System?

Reset a Vehicle’s Charging System Anytime a Battery is Disconnected or Replaced.

Think how complicated and sophisticated a vehicle’s charging system is, and what it needs to accommodate versus just ten years ago. We weren’t charging two or more cell phones while driving down the road, nor was a GPS or laptop computer plugged in, and we certainly weren’t using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi in our vehicles. Now we are, and the charging system has to account for that.

Any variances or current spikes can shorten battery life and damage sensitive electronic equipment, and our vehicles today are filled with just that – electronic equipment. It’s why more OEMs are recommending or even requiring a reprogramming after a battery replacement, to ensure everything is functioning to factory spec.

As a battery ages, it’s charged differently. The vehicle and charging system knows that, and without being reset, it will charge a new battery as it charged the old one, which could shorten overall battery life on your customer’s new investment.

You can actually fry a new battery within a year or less by charging it improperly. Think of the return repairs and unhappy customers waiting in line, being told they need another new battery because the system wasn’t reset during the last installation.

It seems the old R&R – remove & replace - will soon be a new R&R – replace and reflash – as the adage of getting a customer’s vehicle back on the road.
